Time to Say Goodbye?

Everyone experiences opening their closet door and seeing items that they haven’t worn. Could it be that it’s time to let go of some things? Or do you think you should give those items a few more chances?

Why is it so hard to make some edits to your wardrobe? Well, we have memories and stories attached to clothes. We have guilt about buying and not wearing what we purchased. It’s hard to face that waste of money. Or we look at clothes that were bought hastily or purchased while emotions were running high. It reminds us of habits we’d rather not face.

Walt Disney quote

You’re not alone in all of this. Most people have faced this at one time or another when looking into their closet. Sometimes all we need is a kick-start to get the process going. Here are a few guidelines to help.

Let go of something when…

  1. When it brings up bad memories. (Or in Marie-Kondo-speak – it doesn’t spark joy!)
  2. When alterations are too extensive and expensive to make it fit again.
  3. When something’s been around for several seasons and you still haven’t worn it.
  4. When it doesn’t suit your current style or your current lifestyle. (I still remember when I got rid of my 90’s suits from my 9-5 office days. It was hard to let go, but they just didn’t work for me anymore.)
  5. When you change your hair color and now certain wardrobe pieces make you look washed out. (This is especially important as we get older and our hair changes. What worked for us in our 40’s might not work now.)
  6. When the fabric is too worn, too faded, too loose, too stretched out, too limp.
  7. When your cute shoes are consistently hurting your feet.
  8. When cashmere sweaters have multiple holes in them.
  9. When a too-tight waistband constantly distracts you.
  10. When the fabric is scratchy and all you think about is getting home and taking that item off.
  11. When you stare at several polka dot pieces in your wardrobe and realize you haven’t been a polka dot person for five years.
  12. When that trendy piece you wore years ago now looks totally out of style.

Do any of these speak to you? I’ll bet a few of them do – so don’t wait! It might be time to say goodbye….

Thanks for reading – stay stylish!
