Let’s Talk Shoe Storage

One of the things my clients enjoy the most when they redo or reorganize their closets is getting their shoe storage under control. Having a jumble of shoes in the bottom of your closet, or no rhyme or reason to their storage really makes getting dressed a hassle. I wanted to share some ideas for shoe storage you might not have tried before. Maybe one of these will inspire you to tackle the shoes in your closet.

If you’ve got some unused space on the side of a shelving unit or on a wall that isn’t being used, installing some rods (or in this case, long handles) on the wall will allow you to hang heels or booties. This might be especially useful for those shoes you wear the most, so they’ll always be in sight and ready to go.

If you like seeing more of your shoes, rather than just the toes or heels, and you have the space, storing your shoes sideways is a great option.

I always recommend storing shoes by color, and then by style/use (booties together, heels together, etc.) It helps you quickly grab the pair that works with your outfit.

Tip for Boots: You don’t necessarily have to go out and buy special gadgets to store your tall boots to keep their shape. Just roll up a magazine and put it into the boot. It will help your boots ‘stand up’ and store more easily.

Rotate by Seasons when you can. Just as you rotate clothing in and out of your closet according to seasonal need, do the same with your shoes. This will make more room for the shoes you need to have available.

If you store your shoes under your hanging clothes, put the out of season and rarely worn shoes lined up against the wall, with your current and most-worn shoes in the front row where you can see them.

Let me know if you have any special tricks/tips for storing and organizing your shoes. Thanks for reading – stay safe!
