Sneak Into Fall

Ok, so Fall is here – technically. Labor Day has come and long gone – stores have Halloween decorations for sale (and some Christmas too – yikes!) – pumpkin spice lattes are in the coffee shop. I need to get in the spirit, right? Which can be a little difficult when the temps are still pushing 90. So what are we to do?

I say let’s sneak into the Fall season, making a few minor changes to get in the mood of the season. Here are a few I’m doing…

Hang a Fall door wreath. This is one easy idea to implement, and it’s a subtle reminder every day that the season is indeed changing. I pulled my brightly colored wreath and faux flowers off the front porch and replaced them with my beloved Fall wreath and flowers, and I do feel more mentally ‘in the season’ than I was before. I also change out my kitchen hand soap to a pumpkin pie spice scent which helps get me into the Fall mood.

Pair your white jeans with a more seasonally colored top. Wearing white after Labor Day is no longer something to worry about. But to transition into Fall, pair your white with a color that’s not quite so summery. Try a beige/camel (animal print is a good option and it’s everywhere this season), or a darker shade of a color you’ve been wearing (dark cherry instead of bright pink, or navy instead of turquoise, for example.)

Change out your shoes and handbags. This is along the same vein as the above suggestion. I carried my favorite white handbag all summer, but when September 1 hit, I just had to put it away, no matter what the temperature outside. Lighter colors just don’t feel as appropriate now. My lovely bejeweled sandals also had to say bye-bye until next year, in favor of my flats that have been waiting to come out and play. I saw a young woman at the hair stylist the other day who had on a cute little skirt, paired with camel colored, open-toe booties. They looked perfect, even though it was still very warm outside.

Try a dark floral in a light-weight fabric. You’ll be able to keep your cool, and the darker colors will be very seasonally appropriate. As with the animal prints, florals are all over the place this season so you can probably find a print in your colors.

Go ahead – enjoy that pumpkin-spiced latte while you can. The Christmas flavors will be coming soon!
