Curiosities of Covid

Like everyone else, I’m realizing that we’re a year-in on Covid now. I feel very fortunate that our family didn’t experience any of the horrible losses that many families did during this past year. But I am finding it incredible that we’re passing the year-mark – a year when wearing a mask became commonplace, and even an opportunity to express ourselves.

This snakeskin-print mask got a
LOT of use!

Besides that, I just saw that my last blog post was in January, and I did a double-take. Really?! I’ve been having a niggling to write but didn’t realize how long I have been procrastinating. It’s a curiosity of Covid. I have the time, and have the urge, but not the motivation. How unlike me!

Another curiosity of Covid is how few books I’ve read during the shut down. Again, plenty of time to do it, lots of access to books on-line, but I only read 22 books in all of 2020. In 2019 I logged 46 books. So what’s up with that? I have vowed to get back on the book bandwagon this year, and have finished 5 so far, so I’m hopeful. A few favorites:

With more time on my hands (apparently unproductive time, as it goes), I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic about family. One reason for this is my brother-in-law’s on-going interest in geneology. As he shares old family photos with us, I have been gaining more appreciation for the past, for those who came before, endured their own hardships, and paved the way for the current generations. Take this photo of my paternal great grandfather – a Texas Ranger. My brother-in-law colorized this photo and it really brought him to life. He looks like someone you wouldn’t want to mess with!

And then this one – my paternal grandfather standing on his horse. Oh do I love this, and would like to think that his fearlessness resides somewhere in my genes.

I’ve got a thumb-drive full of photos from the past (again, thanks to my brother-in-law.) I think I’m ready to do a more in-depth stroll through family history, as hopefully the Covid-malaise is behind me.

What curiosities of Covid have you experienced?

Thanks for reading – stay safe!
