Favorite Things This Fall

Yes, we are now into September – the other New Year – and I always feel inspired to check out new things, whether it’s clothes (of course!), books, or new gadgets…whatever. Here are a few newbies on my radar:

ColorReader – get an exact paint match for any item. I’m not in the market to paint anything right now, but this little device make me wish I were. You simply let it ‘read’ an item by holding it up against it, and it will give several exact paint matches in the app on your phone. How easy is this!

Rothys Shoes – my husband got me some of these and I love them. They are so comfy and there are a lot of styles/colors to choose from. And here’s the best part – they are made from recycled plastic bottles, and you can throw them in the wash whenever they need freshening. Genius!

My public library – yes, for real! While I totally advocate supporting authors by purchasing their books, in whatever format, the truth is that I don’t need to own most books. Some books I do want to re-read or to mark up, and I do own those. I remember a time in my life when I was obsessed with Agatha Christie. I owned every one of her books (in paperback) and reread them multiple times. But these days I am very happy to borrow a book to read and then happily return it. If you haven’t darkened the door of your local library in a while, be prepared for a shock. They are far from the hush-hush library of old – there’s lots going on and many services to avail yourself of, including a computer if you need one.

What I love is that I can request a book from the library on line, and if it’s not currently on the shelf to borrow, it goes on a wait list and I’m notified via email when it’s available. At the library, I can even check myself out with just a few swipes under a bar-code reader and be on my way. Checking books out of the local library has helped me up my reading game immensely. I’m on track to beat my last years record of 33 books, thanks to my library. And what’s better in the Fall than to curl up with a good book (or two?!)

Speaking of books – be still my heart! The latest novel from one of my all-time favorite authors, Louise Penny, is now out. I want to devour this book – with its unique cast of characters in the village I now love, Three Pines – but I also want to parse it out, little by little, so it won’t end. I think I’ve read all of her books twice, just to enjoy these characters, and her hero-detective Armand Gamache. It’s not necessary, but if you can, read them in order. It will add to your enjoyment.

New Polishes for Fall – I just retired the baby blue polish I wore for most of this summer (and last) and have transitioned into my Fall-lite colors. I’m not quite ready for full-on-Fall just yet, with the temps still pushing 90 every day, but this is a good way to give a bit of a nod to Indian Summer. That baby blue is Essie’s “Find Me an Oasis” – tucking that back in the drawer until next Summer. My new toe-nail polish is Essie’s “Cause and Reflect” – a slate blue with a slight metallic touch (it actually goes on a bit darker than it looks in the bottle.) And for the nails, I’m bringing back a favorite from last year, OPI’s “Beyond the Pale Pink”. Do you return to favorite polishes year after year, or do you always mix it up?
