Monday Musing: Are Your Clothes Talking to You?

My heart says chocolate...Okay – I can just imagine a few of you are laughing at the above quote, just like I did the first time I saw it. Haven’t we all had at least one pair of pants say that to us in our lifetimes…well, okay maybe every week even? It got me thinking about other things our clothes might be saying. Here are a few that came to mind.

“Pick me! Pick me!”  If your clothes were able to talk, don’t you suspect you have a few that might be raising their hands (I guess this would work better for blouses – lol), asking to be chosen for the day? If you’ve got any ‘closet orphans’ that have been neglected, unworn, how about giving them a little love and find a way to pick them to wear.

“Ow! This is killing me! Please take me to the (clothes) doctor!” Drooping hems, seams coming unsewn, pills and pulls…what a sad state of (non)-repair. It’s hard for our clothes to serve us well when they’re crying for some TLC. You know what you need to do…

“I’m exhausted! I need a day off.” Have you fallen into a rut, wearing the same items over and over again? Maybe you’re feeling a bit uninspired? Give those exhausted three or four items a break and look for one of the “pick me’s” from above to build your next outfit. Or try building your outfit from the ground up like I wrote about here. Fashion should be fun, not boring. Break out of your rut and start enjoying getting dressed.

“Air…I need air!!” Do you put your shoes back into their shoe boxes after you take them off and hang your clothes back into their slots in the closet, all without letting them air out for a few hours or even overnight? If so, you’ve got some things that are gasping for air in your wardrobe. Both clothes and shoes last longer and need less cleaning if they’re allowed to air out for at least a few hours before putting them away. If you’re a neat freak like me, it may go against your nature to leave things out for very long, but believe me, it will help your clothes in the long run.

“We’re so beautiful together!” I hope your whole wardrobe is whispering this sweet nothing into your ear every time you look at it. The best wardrobe is one that makes you look beautiful and feel good. Anything in there that doesn’t…well…you should really break up with it. It’s really for the best.

What are your clothes saying to you?
