The Art of Origami and Your Closet

In these days of being cloistered, more or less, at home, I’ve certainly been taking a good look at my closet and how it’s organized. I know many of my clients are doing the same because they tell me so; some of them have decided to take advantage of being home so much more and make a few revisions in their storage spaces during this time.

I’m always happy to design new closets (it’s my happy place for sure!), but I also love making good use of the space I’ve got. Enter Marie Kondo and her KonMari Method of tidying up. One of her favorite methods of storing the items in your closet that you have decided ‘spark joy’ and are worthy of a place in your closet is her origami method of folding.

When I originally read her book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, I didn’t connect her folding method specifically with origami. (Maybe I skipped over that part!) But in looking at it now, the connection is quite clear. She recently wrote about the art of origami on her website.

I’ve always admired the skill of achieving those amazing shapes through origami; years ago we took a cruise and the 1st mate aboard the ship provided a beautiful or funny origami napkin at every meal. It was delightful (unfortunately before the days when we had phones with great cameras to capture every moment of life.)

For those clients who like to fold most of their clothes (tee shirts, jeans, shorts, pants, etc.), this method is a beautiful (and easy and wrinkle-free) one to adopt to provide clean lines of storage, whether on a shelf or in a drawer. It can even work with undergarments and socks.

If you’re a folder, check out her method – you might enjoy it!

Thanks for reading – stay safe!
